Acolytes
"I am among you as one who serves." Luke 22:29
Acolytes are central participants in the liturgies of the church. For as long as people have been worshipping in churches, there have been acolytes who prepared these sacred spaces and assisted the clergy before, during, and after the services. The word acolyte comes from the Greek word for follower – akolouthos – but acolytes in our service are our leaders in worship.
This ministry is open to adults, teenagers, and children as young as fourth grade.
Being an acolyte gives a layperson the chance to play an important role in worship, actively assisting the priest in the celebration of the Eucharist. Sitting or standing next to the altar, the acolytes also serve as models for the congregation to follow.
Each year, we welcome new acolytes to the role, with trainings held occasionally through the program year and regularly in the summer. Training sessions prepare the novice to perform each of the duties of the acolyte (torch bearer, Gospel bearer, crucifer, and server).
If you’re interested in serving as an acolyte at St. Martin’s, contact Father Josh or Mother Justi through the form linked here any time.
